Our heroes come in many shapes and sizes, from the kids who so bravely fight for their lives to the physicians and staff that work so hard each and every day.
This year, we honor Joey.
Back in November of 2015, Joey’s wrestling coach noticed there was something off about his practice. Joey was not his normal, strong, fun-loving and hardworking self. Joey’s parents were notified and they immediately called his Loyola pediatrician. It was determined that Joey was highly anemic and was referred to Loyola oncologist Dr. Eugene Suh. After receiving multiple tests, Joey was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Joey began chemotherapy treatment on November 21, 2015 and has received treatment in both outpatient and inpatient settings. He is currently in the maintenance stage of his chemotherapy, which will last another two years. While he has mostly good days and a few rough ones, he continues to do well. Throughout it all, Joey’s positive attitude shines through and touches every one he meets. The strength and courage he shows is reflective of the support he receives from his family, friends, football and wrestling teammates and the staff at Loyola. Joey’s motto is, “No One Fights Alone”, and for that he is our hero!
You can help kids like Joey by joining us at the Loyola Medicine 5K Supporting Pediatric Care & Research on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 8am at Brookfield Zoo.
